Tofteland has his education from University of Agder (Siviløkonom) and the Norwegian School of Economics (HAE). He has served as the faculty director at the School of Business and Law at University of Agder, where he previously served as associate professor and Head of Department at the Department of Economics and Finance. Tofteland was previously a member of the Accounting Standard Committee (RSS) at the Norwegian Accounting Standards Board (NASB) and the Professional Committee in the Association for Good Municipal Accounting Standards (GKRS).
