My research centers on questions of 19th, 20th and 21st century Scandinavian literature, with an emphasis on Norwegian literature. I have devoted attention to the meaning of the body, representations of trauma, text and image studies, and I have written literary history. My current main project belongs to the memory studies field, where I am exploring contemporary representations of the Second World War in Norway.
My current research project is Making Memories. Contemporary Aesthetic Articulations of Norway in the Second World War.
I have been lecturer at the University of Hamburg (1983-85); editor and editorial director at Aschehoug Publishing House, Oslo (1985-93); assistant professor, associate professor and full professor at the University of Agder (1993 to present).
I am p.t. board member of Centre for Advanced Study, Oslo, and have been member of a Review Panel at Riksbankens Jubileumsfond, Stockholm (2019-2022).
I am member of Agder Academy of Sciences and Letters, The Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters in Trondheim, and The Royal Society of Arts and Sciences in Gothenburg.
